Ryoji Ikeda EP

Japanese sound artist Ryoji Ikeda’s 2021 release, titled Ryoji Ikeda EP, represents a significant archival addition to his discography through the Finnish label Sähkö Recordings. Known for his rigorous exploration of sine waves and frequencies at the threshold of human hearing, Ikeda here presents two lengthy compositions that lean into the more ambient and drone-oriented facets of his work. The tracks, Luxus 1-3 and Space, were originally produced at CCI Studio in Tokyo between 1993 and 1997, capturing a formative period in the artist's career. For this 12-inch vinyl and digital edition, the artist remixed the B-side track in 2020 to accommodate the specific requirements of the format, ensuring the clarity of its high-frequency components. The release features graphic design by Sähkö founder Tommi Grönlund and a sleeve drawing by Ivana Franke, maintaining the label’s distinct aesthetic identity. Mastered by Beau Thomas at Ten Eight Seven Mastering, the record situates itself within a year of prolific output for Ikeda, appearing alongside his Music for Installations series. Sonically, the EP balances warm bass foundations with the clinical, mathematical precision that has defined Ikeda’s influence on modern electronic and noise music.
