Zurich-based sound artist Dominik Grenzler, performing as An Moku, released the eight-track album Less in April 2021 through the Puremagnetik label. A former touring bassist for major pop acts, Grenzler’s work under this moniker represents a shift toward conceptual sound design and exploratory drone. Less serves as the artist's first dedicated foray into hauntology, a direction inspired by his listening habits during the pandemic lockdown. The album was recorded over a two-day session using a restricted setup of bass guitar, two pedalboards, and the Zoia modular effects synthesizer to create a textured fabric of voltage and impedance. Incorporating dusty vinyl crackles and pitched-down loops, the compositions evoke haunted spaces and still-life architectures, moving away from traditional bass tones toward abstract walls of sound. Issued as a limited cassette and digital release, the record centers on the churning soundscape of the track Melancholia before guiding the listener toward the closing piece, Absent. By embracing technical limitations and a philosophy of reduction, An Moku transforms the sound of equipment pushing against resistance into a sensual, industrial bottom.
