Ripe Earth

Many Blessings, the experimental solo project of Denver-based musician Ethan Lee McCarthy, released the debut album Ripe Earth in 2018. McCarthy is widely recognized for his contributions to the extreme metal scene as a member of Primitive Man and Vermin Womb, but this outlet focuses on the intersection of harsh noise and dark ambient textures. Originally issued as a cassette through the label Kill You Club, the seven-track recording was later repressed for European audiences by Tartarus Records in 2020. The album spans over an hour of material, characterized by dense layers of harsh drone and electronic experimentation that deviate from the artist's typical sludge and grindcore foundations. Compositions such as the nearly nineteen-minute To Serve and the opening Darkness in my hand establish a bleak, immersive atmosphere through sustained sonic pressure. Released on Valentine’s Day, the work serves as a stark exploration of abrasive soundscapes rather than traditional melodic structures. Ripe Earth remains a significant entry in McCarthy’s discography, situating his sound design within the broader landscape of contemporary American noise and drone.
