Songs of Mourning

Songs of Mourning is a 2024 collaborative split album featuring Canadian artist UgUrGkuliktavikt and German project HELLBERG. Based in Trois-Rivières, Québec, UgUrGkuliktavikt is the alias of Felix Pelissier, a prolific figure in the hauntological and dungeon synth scenes who also curates the ECHØVEIL RECORDS netlabel. HELLBERG, the meditative drone project of German musician R.P., specializes in doom drone textures and multifaceted acoustic landscapes that explore themes of sunless abysses. The digital release consists of two long-form, wordless tracks: the 25-minute "Dunst" by UgUrGkuliktavikt and the 18-minute "Qualm" by HELLBERG. Situated within the intersections of minimal drone, noise, and dark ambient, the work utilizes atmospheric shrouds to evoke a sense of disconnection between mind and body. This collaboration arrives during a highly active period for both artists, particularly for UgUrGkuliktavikt, who has released numerous experimental works throughout 2024 including De Vermis Mysteriis and Parasomnie.
