Released in 1999 on the V/Vm Test Records imprint Offal, Selected Memories From The Haunted Ballroom marks the debut of Leyland James Kirby’s influential project, The Caretaker. The album was recorded between 1997 and 1999 in Manchester, drawing conceptual inspiration from the ghostly ballroom scenes in Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation of The Shining. Across twenty-five tracks, Kirby utilizes distorted and fragmented samples of 1920s and 1930s big band and swing recordings sourced from old 78 RPM records. These archival melodies are submerged in dense layers of reverb, delay, and vinyl surface noise, creating a hauntological atmosphere where choral and orchestral fragments drift in and out of focus. The work is a foundational entry in the hauntology and dark ambient genres, establishing a sonic language centered on the intersection of nostalgia and memory decay. Originally issued as a limited edition CD, the album initiated a two-decade exploration of psychological themes that would eventually culminate in the artist's later multi-stage works on dementia.
