冥° / Meido

Tokyo-based sound artist Yengo presents 冥° / Meido, a 2025 album that navigates the intersection of experimental noise and avant-garde sound design. The release is characterized by rising oscillators that evoke the drawing of curses from the underworld, layered with drifting collage noise that gradually intensifies into a state of sonic catastrophe. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of J-horror and Taisho-era romanticism, the work creates a haunting atmosphere rooted in the mythological concept of Meido, a dark realm of trials. The two-track album was mastered by Yui Kimijima at Tsubame Studio and features visual design by Shinya Shimazaki of Zouenkeikaku. The physical edition is presented as a cassette tape uniquely wrapped in bamboo skin and secured with octopus thread, featuring a mini-booklet styled after traditional folding screens. Notably, the cassette format leaves Side A blank, concentrating the entire auditory experience on Side B to emphasize its specific narrative flow. Situated within the contemporary Japanese psychedelic and noise ambient scenes, the album serves as a visceral exploration of atmospheric dread and experimental texture.
