Helen Anahita Wilson, a Brighton-based composer and researcher known for bridging South Asian classical traditions with Western experimentalism, presents her latest album, Nightshade. Released in 2026 via Flag Day Recordings, this nine-track work is available on CD and digital formats, marking a significant entry in the year’s avant-garde landscape. The project functions as a sonic exploration of the Solanaceae plant family, utilizing biological data harvested from various species to trigger electronic and organic sound sources. Wilson constructs intricate duets between these plant-derived signals and a diverse array of instrumentation, including sarangi, piano, organ, and found percussion. Notable contributions include trombone work by Amos Miller on the drone-heavy centerpiece, while other tracks incorporate microvoltage fluctuations and Latin recitations to evoke themes of myth and mortality. The resulting compositions move between percussive pulses and dark ambient textures, grounding the record in the traditions of musique-concrète and experimental sound design.
